SITE N\u00b0 6 LA ST\u00c8LE ET LE CANON<\/h1>\n

Vous \u00eates maintenant au niveau de la tranch\u00e9e de la 1\u00e8re ligne britannique apr\u00e8s avoir travers\u00e9 ce qui \u00e9tait le noman\u2019s land depuis la borne n\u00b05.<\/p>\n

A 200 m. \u00e0 l\u2019ouest, les lignes britanniques franchissent la rivi\u00e8re LYS pour s\u2019enfoncer en BELGIQUE et rejoindre le saillant d\u2019YPRES \u00e0 une vingtaine de kilom\u00e8tres puis la Mer du Nord en prenant appui sur le fleuve YSER.<\/p>\n

Sur la commune de FRELINGHIEN, en limite de la commune voisine d\u2019HOUPLINES, le syst\u00e8me de tranch\u00e9es britanniques comprend 3 lignes sur une profondeur de 100 \u00e0 200m.<\/p>\n

La premi\u00e8re ligne permet de d\u00e9celer directement l\u2019activit\u00e9 de l\u2019ennemi par l\u2019observation et l\u2019\u00e9coute et d\u2019appliquer des tirs tendus. La seconde ligne, appel\u00e9e ligne d\u2019appui, permet des tirs courbes en avant de la 1\u00e8re ligne ou d\u2019opposer une nouvelle r\u00e9sistance si la 1\u00e8re ligne est franchie. Enfin la tranch\u00e9e de soutien o\u00f9 peuvent \u00eatre positionn\u00e9es les troupes en r\u00e9serve avec les ravitaillements.<\/p>\n

La st\u00e8le, visible \u00e0 cet emplacement, a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9e le 11 novembre 2008 en pr\u00e9sence des descendants des officiers qui commandaient les troupes des deux camps : le major Miles STOCKWELL et le Baron Joachim Von SINNER pour comm\u00e9morer la tr\u00eave qui eu lieu \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de No\u00ebl 1914.<\/p>\n

le Canon, vestige de cette \u00e9poque a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9 le 11 novembre 2021 suite au don de la famille Pr\u00e9vost.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n

Cet \u00e9pisode est connu au travers d\u2019un certain nombre de t\u00e9moignages dont voici l\u2019essentiel :<\/p>\n

\u00ab Le matin de No\u00ebl 1914, tout \u00e9tait calme. Plus de tirs. Un des sous- officiers de la compagnie A du Royal Welsh Fusiliers <\/strong>dressa une planche avec l\u2019inscription \u00ab Joyeux No\u00ebl \u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n

Les Allemands de la compagnie de mitrailleuses du 6\u00e8me J\u00e4ger Battalion <\/strong>prussiens qui occupaient la brasserie LUTUN en face firent de m\u00eame.<\/em><\/p>\n

Vers midi, un soldat allemand avan\u00e7a dans la brume le long du chemin de halage les mains en l\u2019air. Un soldat gallois le rejoignit. Ils se serr\u00e8rent la main et le Prussien offrit une bo\u00eete de cigares. D\u2019autres Allemands sortirent des tranch\u00e9es.<\/em><\/p>\n

Les Gallois, qui avaient interdiction formelle de faire de m\u00eame, se <\/em>mirent alors \u00e0 lancer des bo\u00eetes de b\u0153uf en conserve, de la confiture \u2026 Les Allemands cri\u00e8rent de ne pas tirer, qu\u2019ils ne voulaient pas se battre\u00a0 ce jour-l\u00e0.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ils hiss\u00e8rent un tonneau de bi\u00e8re sur le parapet et le roul\u00e8rent dans le no man\u2019s land.<\/em><\/p>\n

Le commandant de la compagnie A du Royal Welsh Fusiliers<\/strong>, le capitaine STOCKWELL raconte qu\u2019il grimpa sur le haut de la tranch\u00e9e et cria en allemand qu\u2019il souhaitait voir le commandant de la compagnie adverse. Selon le t\u00e9moignage d\u2019un soldat gallois, de nombreux fusiliers avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 quitt\u00e9 leur tranch\u00e9e pour rejoindre les Allemands, si bien que la situation s\u2019\u00e9tait impos\u00e9e au capitaine STOCKWELL. Le capitaine Von SINNER, commandant la compagnie prussienne, vint \u00e0 la rencontre du capitaine gallois sur le No-man\u2019s Land. Les deux officiers se salu\u00e8rent r\u00e9glementairement.<\/em><\/p>\n

STOCKWELL indiqua qu\u2019il avait ordre de ne pas conclure d\u2019armistice et qu\u2019il \u00e9tait risqu\u00e9 pour les troupes allemandes d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e0 d\u00e9couvert. Von SINNER acquies\u00e7a et, ayant re\u00e7u les m\u00eames ordres, renvoya ses hommes dans leurs lignes. Cependant tous les deux se mirent d\u2019accord pour une tr\u00eave jusqu\u2019au matin suivant. STOCKWELL offrit du pudding \u00e0 Von SINNER et \u00e0 ses officiers subalternes qui l\u2019avaient rejoint. Ceux-ci offrirent des bouteilles de bi\u00e8re et tous trinqu\u00e8rent.<\/em><\/p>\n

La soir\u00e9e du 25 d\u00e9cembre et la nuit suivante, aucun coup de feu ne fut tir\u00e9. Le 26 au matin, STOCKWELL escalada la tranch\u00e9e, tira trois coups en l\u2019air et d\u00e9ploya un drapeau avec l\u2019inscription \u00ab Joyeux No\u00ebl \u00bb<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Von SINNER tira aussi trois coups en l\u2019air. La guerre avait repris.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pourtant tout resta calme hormis de nombreuses exclamations vantant la qualit\u00e9 de la bi\u00e8re fran\u00e7aise. La paix r\u00e9gna encore toute la journ\u00e9e, ponctu\u00e9e par des chants gallois et allemands !<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n
